What Israel must do to defend herself against increasingly vociferous attacks

Recent US administration verbal attacks on Israel and counter-criticism of the administration

Verbal Attacks
Vice President Biden, State Department Hillary Clinton, David Axelrod have all jumped on Israel.  During recent trip to Israel VP Biden stated:

"I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem.  The substance and timing of the announcement, particularly with the launching of proximity talks, is precisely the kind of step that undermines the trust we need right now....."

(Only last week, the US State Department criticized Israel for planning to teach Jews about Rachel’s Tomb and the Cave of the Patriarchs - their heritage.)

  • National Council of Young Israel ‘condemns’ Vice President Biden's condemnation:

"We strongly 'condemn' Vice President Biden's statements and respectfully urge him to rescind his incendiary remarks about Jerusalem.  The reality is that there is no such entity as 'East Jerusalem,' there is only Jerusalem, which is the united capital of Israel.”

Detailed description People often ask: Why were Pharaoh and Egypt punished when we know that G-d helped to harden their hearts so that they would not let us out of Egypt during the plagues?

A proper analysis of the sections will reveal that the purpose of the plagues was to make an example of Pharaoh for our sake and the sake of all those who watched the proceedings. Their punishment was for what they had done prior to the plagues.

Israel advocacy - Strong Arguments vs. commonly employed weak arguments

Bereshith -- In the beginning. Rabbi Isaac said: ... (Psalm 111:6) "He declared to his people the strength of his works (i.e. He gave an account of the work of creation) in order that he might give them the heritage of the nations." For should the peoples of the world say to Israel, "You are robbers, because you took by force the lands of the seven nations of Canaan," Israel may reply to them, "All the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it and gave it to whom he pleased. When he willed He gave it to them, and when He willed He took it from them and gave it to us." (Yalk. Exod. 12:2). []
Strong Arguments
  1. The whole of Israel belongs to the Jewish People
  2. A gift from G-d over 3,000 years ago
  3. We have been living there with a government up until 1,940 years ago
  4. We were forced off our land by the Romans against our will
  5. Our land remained largely empty throughout the years with but a few Arab nomads amongst other trespassers
  6. The Arabs have no claim to Israel whatsoever
  7. The term 'Palestinian' is a misnomer; there is no Palestinian people - only an Arab people. Those in Israel are the same Arab people as those who live in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Syria and the other Arab countries - they all speak Arabic and consider themselves Arab. [See 'Palestinian' covenant Article 12-15 ]
Weak arguments (commonly employed by Israel advocacy groups)
  1. We are 'reasonable' - we are willing to compromise and divide the land but they are unwilling to bend; they demand all of Israel and claim it is all theirs - therefore sympathize with us, as we are 'reasonable' while they are 'unreasonable.'
  2. The Arabs indiscriminately target civilians, women and children whereas we do not - therefore be sympathetic to our side.
  3. We need a place for Jews to flee to and to live without pogroms and holocausts; therefore sympathize with us.
The weakness of the latter arguments

Let us look carefully at the true arguments of the two sides that results from utilizing the weak advocacy arguments:

Arab side: All of Israel ('Palestine') belongs to us Arabs; Israel is a robber state.

Israel's side: We have a right to the land and the Arabs also have rights to the land. We are willing to compromise; let us both share Israel.

Arab response: No - you are a robber state and we do not want to share our land with robbers.

This can be compared to two people coming to a court holding one coat. One side says: "The coat is my coat and the other person stole it." The other side says: "I am willing to compromise: let's divide the value of the coat."
Who will seem correct in the eyes of a third party? Clearly the one who claims that the coat is all his.
- This is because a normal owner will be unwilling to compromise on what is his whereas a thief will be more than willing to compromise to get what is not his.

In our case too, at the end of the day, any 3rd party listening to the weak advocacy arguments will side with the Arab who claims that all of Israel is theirs and that Israel stole it as opposed to the side that is willing to compromise and who apparently does not care about the land.

Israel, US and the Stinking Fish - 1976

(The stinking fish is an old Talmudic parable - read the article referenced below for details)
In this amazingly accurate article, Rabbi Meir Kahane warned in 1976 that America will not be satisfied with all the 'compromises' and 'initiatives' that Israel will concede to, save for the complete surrender to Arab demands to dismantle most of Israel.

Rabbi Kahane explains that Israel will ultimately be forced to say 'NO.'
Had they said the uncomfortable but unavoidable 'NO' earlier they would be have been in a strong position with Israel poised near the Arab capitals whereas pushing off the unavoidable 'NO' until later will bring the same crisis near Tel Aviv, Beersheva and Netanya...

Headlines coming out of Israel over the last week:

Will the academic freedom of Rabbis be banned?

Are Rabbis to be forbidden from speaking the truth?

Detailed description Join us as we discuss Israel's policies as they affect the the residents of Yehuda and Shomron and how they affect Israel itself

what we learn from Hanukkah

"For the miracles and for the wonders...that You did for our forefathers during this season in those days ... You gave over the mighty into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, the unclean into the hands of the clean, the wanton into the hands of those involved in Your Law...for Yourself You made a great and holy name in Your world and for Your people Israel You performed a great salvation ... " [The 'Al Hanisim' prayer said during the eight days of Hannukah]
  • We must take action

  • When it says that Hashem does miracles it means through our actions

  • It is wrong to say that Hashem will take care of what is necessary while we sit idly by

  • When we act and with G-d's help are successful it is a sanctification of G-d's name

  • Terrible tragedies can occur as a result of our inaction
An interesting article on what Hannukah is NOT about by Rabbi Meir Kahane

Detailed description Many people falsely believe that we should wait for G-d's help and take a seat in the back of the theater.

That is wrong.

If we take action and pray for help then G-d will help us - but if we decide to sit and watch then not only will G-d not help but terrible tragedies could result.

'I rejoiced when they said unto me: 'Let us go unto the house of the LORD. [Psalms 122:1]'

Positive commands - Mitzvoth Asei that one has the chance to do when going up to the Temple Mount (non-exhaustive)
  • To fear the sanctuary [Rambam Sefer hamitvoth Mitzvah 21: one example given is "Do not enter the Temple Mount with a staff, your shoes etc..."

"Even though the Mikdash today is destroyed due to our sins, a person is obligated to fear it (today) the same as is done when it is built: one should only enter the places that is permitted, one may not sit in the Temple's courtyard (the Azarah), one should not be frivolous opposite the Eastern Gate etc ... even though it is destroyed it remains in its holiness." [Rambam, Laws of the Sanctuary 7:6-7]

  • To pray in the sanctuary [Rambam Sefer hamitvoth Mitzvah 5: " 'Serve Him in his Mikdash' in other words attempt to pray there"]

  • To build the Sanctuary [Rambam Sefer hamitvoth Mitzvah 20]

  • To blow both the shofar and trumpets on the Temple Mount when there is a danger to israel as a nation.

  • To cry out in prayer to the almighty for a private individual problem such as over a sickness affecting a family member, someone who is withheld from having children, a woman who has difficulty giving birth or any other personal problem.

Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Exec. Vice Pres. of the OU
Detailed descriptionRabbi Weinreb defends Orthodox Union condemnation of the words of Rabbi Wolpo, a Rabbi in Israel.

Rabbi Wolpo, quoting an Israeli law that has the death penalty for Nazi collaborators claimed that if Israel would follow its own law it would hang a number of ministers who supplied Arab terrorists with guns and ammunition. It is well documented (including sources such as Israel's ministry of Interior) that Mein Kampf is a best seller amongst the Arabs of Judea and Samaria and that the Arabs who live there are admireres of Nazi Germany.

During the discussion, Rabbi Weinreb conceded that Rabbi Wolpo may have been accurate vis a vis israeli law and that there is no democracy within Israel that would allow Rabbi Wolpo to work 'within the system,' as Rabbi Weinreb had first suggested.

Nevertheless Rabbi Weinreb defended the OU's position. Rabbi Weinreb similarly defended the OU's public opposition to a rally that challenged Olmert's plan of expulsion of Jews from Judea and Samaria. The rally, which took place in Washington D.C., was set to greet Olmert whose express purpose of coming to Washington was to secure $10 billion in loan guarantees to fund his expulsion.

Interesting, listen to the full interview.

Yekutiel (Mike) Guzofsky, director of Referendum for Israel
Detailed descriptionYekutiel describes how he was arrested and convicted of 'sedition' for administering a public opinion poll shortly before the expulsion of Jews from Gaza. Yekutiel reasoned that since the expulsion of Jews for the sake of 'peace' was acceptable to the Israeli government, he would conduct a public opinion poll as to what type of expulsion wuld achieve a more lasting peace. 'Would the expulsion of Jews from Gaza thus bringing Arab populations closer to rest of Israel achieve a more lasting peace OR would the expulsion of the Arabs from Gaza, thus furthere distancing the Arab populatioin from the rest of Israel bring a more lasting peace?' - Very interesting.

Detailed description In this follow-up show, we researched and answered a question raised by a caller during a prior JAN show. Specifically, the caller wanted to know how it was possible for all the animals to fit within Noah's Teivah (ark).

The answer in a nutshell is that the number of species taken on the Taivah were a small subset of all species - only land animals that could not survive in the water, the size of the Ark and the size of an average animal.
